Emergency Department

The First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yatsen University (Zhongshan Hospital) was founded in 1910. It is the largest and most prestigious teaching hospital in the south of China. As one of the first five pioneers of Emergency Medicine in China, it began to provide pre-hospital emergency service for Guangzhou city in 1950. The independent institution of Emergency Department was set up in early 1980s. But the first recruitment of physicians specialized in Emergency Medicine occurred in 1987 and was the starting point for emergency medicine to become an independent discipline in clinical services. Rapid progress in teaching, research and healthcare service has been made since January 1997, when a new leadership team instituted through open recruitment and initiated the construction and development of this discipline in our current healthcare system.

The current Emergency Department in Zhongshan Hospital comprises the headquarters (Yuexiu District, Zhongshan Road) and eastern section (Huangpu District). After 20 years of continuous and sustainable development, it has become a comprehensive emergency medical center with integration of pre-hospital first aid, in-hospital emergency and critical care (EICU) service. Not only do the hardware and equipment fully meet the 'General Hospital Emergency Department Construction and Management Guide" formulated by the formal State Ministry of Health and all criteria required by 3A top-level hospital emergency department, but it also is effective in the training of emergency medical professionals. Our upper echelon talent has developed a dedicated, vibrant, multidisciplinary team structure. A faculty team consisting of more than 50 physicians and 120 nurses has been working toward excellence in the ED through strict discipline and strong teamwork. Statistics show annual volume of more than 250,000 emergency room visits, more than 30,000 observation unit stays. Unique to Zhongshan Hospital is the inclusion of an inpatient area managed by Emergency Medicine physicians and staff called the General Medicine Ward. A little more than 2,000 people are admitted and then discharged annually from this unique unit. The illnesses requiring admission to the General Medicine Ward cover a variety of acute, critically ill patients and complicated diseases from the ED.

Our medical staff created the miracle of 'treat 108 patients, zero medical staff infections" during the struggle against 'SARS" in 2003. Ten persons on our staff were awarded by the government for their meritorious service.

In recent years, we have delivered outstanding emergency service in the fight against bird flu, foot and mouth disease, Dengue fever and other infectious diseases, as well as trauma care and first aid during Wenchuan and Yushu earthquakes. We also were widely acclaimed for providing medical service during 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games. Our faculty enthusiastically participated in the 'national medical teams" serving the mountain areas in Guizhou, Fujian, Guangxi and other provinces. As a result our Emergency Department became one of the first ten national key clinical specialties (emergency medicine) construction units in 2012.

Our department has been qualified to be a training institute for the master degree and doctoral degree in emergency medicine since 1996 and 2004 respectively. The Zhongshan Hospital Emergency Department currently possess two doctoral tutors and six postgraduate supervisors, six of whom have senior titles and seven have vice senior titles. Our institution was qualified as the first standardized residency training base for Emergency Medicine accredited by the former Ministry of Health in 2006. In recent years, a multi-level teaching system providing education to graduate students, undergraduates (five-year and eight-year) and advanced students from other hospitals. Our hospital also provides many opportunities for the continuing education of our staff.

In addition to the training of our senior professionals, we also pay special attention to the education of the “technical backbone” for the staff of Primary Hospitals. We have trained hundreds of doctors and nurses via 'refresher courses in emergency healthcare for physicians & nurses" in the past eighteen years and have established long-term support relationships with several Primary Hospitals in remote mountain regions. National and provincial continuing education projects are continuing to be implemented.

Important to the mission of our hospital and emergency medicine is the ongoing education of the community and the lay public. Bystander CPR, choking lifesaving interventions, hemorrhage control, and many other lifesaving skills form the foundation of the public medical training programs.

After years of effort and accumulation, our department has formed stable academic research priorities including cardiopulmonary resuscitation, sepsis, chest pain center and wound repair, led by Professor Xiaoxing Liao, Zhongfu Ma, Hong Zhan and Weiping Wang, respectively. So far we have been supported by five grant funds from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (General Program) and a number of provincial grant funds. In recent years over forty related papers have been published annually. As of now over thirty SCI original research articles have been published in journals. One of these prestigious journals was rated with an impact factor (IF) of 6.3. A number of textbooks and treatises have been edited and published.

Our department is a committee member in Chinese Medical Association Emergency Medicine Branch and Disaster Medicine Branch and deputy chair of Guangdong Medical Association Emergency Medicine Branch and Disaster Medicine Branch. A number of our professors are key members in the Chinese Medical Association, Integrative Medicine Association, Nursing Association and other academic organizations. We have established a stable academic partnership with University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in the United States, Tan Tock Seng Hospital in Singapore and Prince of Wales Hospital in Chinese University of Hong Kong. Since 2012, the annual hosting of the 'Zhongshan International Emergency and Disaster Medicine Forum" provides an academic exchange platform for domestic and global colleagues, greatly enhancing the academic understanding and scope of our endeavors.

Our direction and goals: We are dedicated to strengthening our department structure and abilities through: optimizing personnel strengths, improving healthcare delivery quality and intensifying research priorities. Enhancing communication and cooperation within our organization remains a primary goal with the aim of establishing and maintaining the highest quality of healthcare service, the top-level teaching capabilities and the far-reaching research achievements.
